Spellings

Each week we will give you up to 10 spellings to practice. At school we use different strategies to help children learn and remember spellings. We may use a mnemonic, a visual clue or highlight the tricky part of the word in a different colour. You could practice spelling the words each week using one of these activities:

Look, say, cover, write and check – Ask your child to look at the word and say it. Ask them to notice any tricky parts, known phonic sounds or the size and shape of letters in the word. Next cover up the word so that it can’t be seen and ask your child to write it down. As they are writing, it is helpful for them to be saying any phonic sounds or tricky parts which they remember. When they have finished encourage them to check their spelling carefully. If they were correct move on to the next word. If they were wrong what happened? Which part of the word did they struggle with? Encourage your child to correct the word and try again.

Unjumble the letters – Look at the word and say it as above noticing any sounds, letter sizes and tricky parts. Write down the word on paper or card and cut up each letter. Mix up the pieces and ask your child to put the word back together again. You could try asking your child to close their eyes whilst you take away one of the letters from the word. Can they tell you which letter is missing? You could also use magnetic letters to do this if you have some at home.

Build the word – Ask your child to look at the word and say it as above. If you have playdough, plasticine or Lego at home they could use these to build the word. The 3D shapes can lie together flat on the page, or if built strong enough, they can stand upwards.

Against the clock – Ask your child to look at the word and say it as above. Set a timer. How many times can your child write the word correctly in 30 seconds? Challenge your child – can they beat you?

Roll and Spell – The children really enjoy learning spellings this way in class. Ask your child to look at the word as above. Roll a dice (you may have one at home from a game). If you don’t have a dice you may call out a number 1-6 or choose a number card. Each number corresponds to a different way of practicing your key words:

Spellings - Week beginning 13th July

This week instead of a set of spelling to learn we have a spelling rule for you to learn and remember. You have heard the word ‘apostrophe’ before and last week you looked at words that involved using an apostrophe in the place of a missing letter (like in ‘didn’t’ which is short for ‘did not’). This week you will practise using an apostrophe for possession, which means something, belongs to a person (for example, Jayden’s coat).

Spellings- week beginning 6th July 2020

Your spellings this week will be a little different as we have now completed all of the Year 2 Common Exception Words. This week we would like you to learn to spell and understand words in the contracted form using apostrophes appropriately. To do this an activity will be posted each day in the 'Year 2' section on the Home Learning tab. The activities will help you to understand why some words are spelt with apostrophes when they are in the contracted form.
